The other day I took a look at Tony Kuyper's Luminosity Masks as a way to better select or isolate the bright and dark or mid tones in any picture. The possibilities for editing and blending landscape images with high dynamic ranges are endless, and it looks like it is going to be quite a learning curve. If you are interested, have a look at Tony's site: [link]

This image is made of three images taken from one RAW file. This choice was necessary to cover the different highlights, as the light was pretty harsh at the time. How does it look?

Update: Based on the advice of Tony Kuyper I added more contrast to some bright and dark areas using a "luminosity painting layer", as he calls it.

Hi there Alban, love your work! Just wondering if you recommend the D90 over a couple of the newer Nikons, like the D5100 or the 7000? Thanks. :)

Hi Mike, thanks for the appreciation. Regarding the D90 and your question, I have no idea, I only know the D90, but for those things I listen a lot to Ken Rockwell, and he praises the D5100 and D7000 a lot, and says that they trail the D90 in every way: [link]

A lot is going on in three years of technical advance, so I expect it to be better. If I would buy a new camera today, I probably would get the D7000. I love Nikon, and have no idea about Canon.

yeah, I'm a Nikon man. I had the D5100 for a few months and really enjoyed it. Gave me some great results. Unfortunately it was stolen recently and I haven't been able to recover it. So now I have the opportunity to choose another. I have been so impressed with pictures I've seen from the D90 that I'm almost considering buying it over one of the newer models but still thinking it over. Thanks for responding, happy shooting! :)

Thanks. Did you make a decision already?

well not yet, my family has offered to replace it for me. So, hopefully I'll be going back to the D5100, which is fine by me! Meanwhile, I'm borrowing the old D40 from a friend whom I sold it to. ;) Its a great little camera for its time. Took some of my best shots with it a couple years ago.
